Steven, who has written for the television series since it first appeared on BBC One back in 2010, admitted that there have been no plans to film the new season.
The 56-year-old revealed that they will wait “two years, at least” to release the next series while he and Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss work on their new project, Dracula.
He told Radio Times: ”We’re not going to do Sherlock whilst we’re doing Dracula. So it’s not going to happen in the immediate future. Never say never, but no – we don’t have an idea [right now]."
The news will surely disappoint fans of the sleuth, who is played by Benedict Cumberbatch, as he was last seen onscreen in the fourth season in January 2017.
Asked whether the show will return, Steven replied: “Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock – we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways.
“We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again.
“I think maybe the time for a longer gap is upon us, I don’t know. A longer gap? They’re always long gaps!”
Last year, Mark admitted that it will be difficult to get the whole cast together to film new scenes for Sherlock.
During an interview with ITV’s Lorraine, the 58-year-old Scottish host asked: “Sherlock - is it coming back? It must be hard to get everyone together.”
Mark, 51, confessed: “That’s exactly it. We deliberately left it in a happy place where we could go back. But we have no plans at the moment.”
He also mentioned that it will be particularly difficult because of Benedict and Martin Freeman’s blossoming Hollywood careers.
Telling The Telegraphy: “We do have two film stars in the programme. They haven’t needed to do these jobs for a very long time. They’re coming back because they want to.
Sherlock star Louise Brealey recently spoke about whether she would be willing to reprise her role as Molly Hooper.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Times, she said: “I love Molly, and I would love to play her again.
"Yeah, it's strange but I just feel very protective of that character.
"I feel very close to her. I don't know, she just means a lot to me, which seems a bit silly. She just does – I dunno why."
